Summer 2011
" It is with some sadness that the Group have to report the recent death of Roger Rowe, past Chairman, President and a staunch supporter of Advanced Motoring ethos towards driving standards. As a member of the Crawley/Horsham Group from 1999, Roger had put much work into both Observing, Road Safety, and an early version of our website; in addition he had previously taken on the role of Chairman helping to maintain the profile of our Group locally. Notwithstanding increasing ill health, Roger gallantly maintained his involvement until recent events necessarily caused him to relinquish his activities. We offer our sincere condolences to Roger's family. "
Derek Williams.
Welcome to the new Crawley & Horsham Group of Advanced Motorists newsletter. We are at last moving into the 21st century and by using the world wide we, electronic media and traditional postal methods we are endeavouring to communicate to our members and other interested parties over the widest possible area.
The summer has arrived and we are all looking forward to the wonderful 'British Summer' well that's the theory anyway. This year the group has completely redesigned the CHGAIM web site. It has a new look and features, which we hope will encourage you to return frequently to see the updates on motoring news, features, editorials and general information relating to your local group and activities, as well as tips and reminders of what safe motoring is all about.
Please feel free to browse round and give us some feedback. You will also find a copy of the 'News Letter" online
Happy motoring Stephen Hodgson (Web master).
Thoughts from the ' Chair '
It seems not so many weeks ago that I penned the Spring offering to members and we have now come through an early warm season with plenty to do in the garden and a lack of rain water; what then you say has this to do in relation to motoring ? Just as with Winter precautions, we should all remember that each of the seasons create their own peculiarities with road surfaces, growing vegetation and the attendant rural aspects of many roads in our region. Little or no rain will mean that roads become ultra dry and possibly coated in residual grease, tar and oil resulting in a skid ready surfaces when a shower of water eventually arrives; spring vegetation growth then adds to the fun of 'spot the road sign' ( Information element of the System ) hidden carefully in hedgerows when perhaps only the mounting pole remains visible - but the Advanced Driver ( which you surely all are ) will anticipate the danger or information which this sign is intended to display. Spurred also into activity, the Highways Authorities will have been busily repairing and patching many seasonally affected surfaces and especially in rural spots this will involve a deal of grit generally distributed so as to leave loose chippings which have an affinity to windscreens - don't be caught out unawares - hazard awareness. All of the foregoing should be second nature to Advanced Colleagues but human nature being what it is I trust that a reminder will not go amiss. No doubt by the time that this is in print the summer season will be upon us so for those who might be making longer journeys on holiday please don't overlook the pre-travel checks which will avoid you becoming one of the motorway hard shoulder visitors awaiting the arrival of a mechanic.
best wishes, Derek Williams
On the 10th May the examiner for our area, Amanda Smith, kindly came and talked to the committee.
Among the items, we discussed the things the examiner was expecting to see from the student during the IAM test. The items listed are to some extent in priority order, but all should be considered.
These are very brief notes so please refer to your IAM book for more details.
This is the MAIN area of weakness. Without a sound understanding and application of the system of car control you are wasting your and the examiners time. You must explain the system AND demonstrate it.
INFORMATION
Position
Speed
Gear
Acceleration
If you don’t see what’s going on you cannot do anything about it. Get your eyes up and see what’s going on around you. Use your mirrors as much as possible. You can then plan and act, in the correct manner.
Unless you stick to the speed limits, the examiner MUST fail you as you have broken the law.
This does NOT mean high speed. It means getting on with your journey. Do the speed limit if it’s safe to do so, particularly on motorways. Take the opportunity to overtake or make progress when appropriate. Plan your next move early and be in the right place, in the right gear, at the right time.
Use the gearbox for the speed you want. Don’t drive in too high a gear. Be flexible in your selection. Change down where appropriate; be smooth and sympathetic to your vehicle.
Observers can help with problems here, but it is up to the student to learn this. ALL drivers are supposed to know this already.
Observers can show you the principles. Students go and practice EVERY day. When’s the last time you did any real manoeuvring. The day of the test is too late.
These are things you could only have learned from observed drives. They are not compulsory but earn you great merit.
VEHICLE CHECK (POWDERY)
Shows you understand the importance of the vehicle working properly and the safety of you, your passengers and your surroundings.
The examiner cannot read minds. If you explain as you go along, what you see, what you are going to do about it and then do it, what a difference. You may have seen something the examiner hasn’t, particularly when your position restricts their view. I. e. why did you sound the horn?

Car MOT text reminder service
Forgetting to get the MOT done on your car can be an inconvenient and costly mistake. In today’s busy world, it’s not always easy to remember everything, and the MOT on the car is not always high on everyone’s list. So it’s good to hear that The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) has set up a new MOT text reminder service for customers. By registering, you'll get text messages telling you when your MOT is due.
To benefit from the MOT text reminder service you will need to register your details with VOSA. Once registered, three text reminders will be sent to your mobile phone to remind you of your MOT date.
They will be sent:
five weeks before
two weeks before
the day before
The text message reminders will include the vehicle registration number and MOT due date.
To use this service there is a one-off charge of £1.50 (including VAT). This charge will be collected through your mobile phone network provider once your registration has been accepted.
However, you must remember that you are still responsible for ensuring that your vehicle has its MOT test by the due date even if you subscribe for the MOT text reminder service.
To find out more about how the service works and how you can register, visit www.direct.gov.uk.
